The
IIMs today consist of six campuses across India - Calcutta
and Ahmedabad are the oldest, established in 1961. They
were followed by IIM Bangalore in 1973, IIM Lucknow in
1984, IIM Kozhikode in 1996 and IIM Indore in 1998. They
have been set up as autonomous institutes by the Government
of India to identify and groom the best intellectual talent
in India. Around 195,000 students compete for fewer than
1,200 general seats in the IIMs (as per 2007 figures).
Today, there are over 15,000 IIM alumni, leading businesses
across the globe and working in practically all the Fortune
500 companies.
